{99-cent} Miss Saigon
A presentation of the late 20th century musical excess as a piece of poor theater; a toy helicopter, a bundle of yarn and balloon for the child, mimed guns and phones...a fine balance of melodrama and earnestness. Here are two photo galleries: Gallery One and Gallery Two.
365 Plays / 365 Days
A week-long meditation on the idea that Theater is Every Day. Performed in the intimate spaces of people’s homes.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Ten Red Hen is a young theater company based in Oakland. We're committed to creating engaging, relevant new theater that interrogates both the form of live art-making and the world around us. Our inaugural production, {The 99-Cent} Miss Saigon, was a poor theater version of the biggest musical of all time, deconstructing the expectations of the "Broadway musical." The show was a big success, with excited audiences, great reviews and special shout-outs in The Chronicle, SF Bay Guardian, SF Weekly, East Bay Express, Berkeley Daily Planet, 96 Hours and Flavorpill. This December, we used Week 4 of Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 Days/365 Plays project as a meditation on Theater Every Day, bringing the magic of the plays into homes throughout the Bay Area. Our non-profit status comes from our tremendous fiscal sponsor, CounterPULSE.

{99-cent} Miss Saigon
"If you've ever wondered how this melodramatic spectacle would hold up without the huge production and the helicopter taking off, the answer is really, really well. This totally stripped-down, no-budget staging is delightful throughout, and the music actually sounds better at times without the swelling orchestra, just a piano and an acoustic guitar with some violin and clarinet here and there. The workaround depictions of explosions, the baby, and the helicopter are pretty funny, but this isn't just some campy romp, and it's heartrending when it needs to be."
